Recovering, on purpose

What the research on vibroacoustic therapy says about muscle, pain and sleep, and where it stays honest.

Recovery is not rest. Rest is what you do when you stop. Recovery is the work the body does while you are stopped, and it needs conditions: muscle that lets go of its guarding, sleep deep enough to matter, a pain signal turned down far enough that the system stops bracing against it.

Low frequency sound has been studied in all three of those places. The trials are small. Read carefully, they are still worth having.

Pain, over twelve weeks

In a twelve week pilot study published in the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation in 2018, Lim, Lim, Suhaimi, Chan and Wahab worked with twenty three patients living with chronic low back or shoulder pain. Each received low frequency vibroacoustic stimulation between sixteen and one hundred and sixty hertz, delivered through the hands and the feet. Across the twelve weeks, pain fell by three and a half points on a ten point visual analogue scale and disability fell by thirteen and a half points on the Pain Disability Index.

Twenty three people make a pilot, not a proof, and those numbers belong to that group of patients rather than to everyone. What holds our attention is the band: sixteen to one hundred and sixty hertz is the register AVA reproduces, and it is the register you feel rather than hear.

Sleep, and the claim we leave alone

Hu, Jiang, Hegadoren and Zhang ran a randomized controlled trial in a cardiac intensive care unit, published in Critical Care in 2015. Patients given earplugs, eye masks and relaxing music reported significantly better sleep quality than patients who were not. The same paper found no significant change in melatonin or cortisol.

We quote both halves on purpose. The experience of sleeping better was real and it was measured. The hormonal story people like to tell about it was not supported by that data, so we do not tell it.

A 2024 study in Scientific Reports by Fan, Zhu, Suzuki, Suzuki, Watanabe, Watanabe and Abe took twelve healthy adults through four ninety minute afternoon naps. Binaural beats at a quarter of a hertz shortened the time it took to reach slow wave sleep compared with a sham condition. Twelve people and four naps: a careful early signal, not a sleep cure.

The result that did not go cleanly

Konkayev and Bekniyazova published a pilot randomized trial of vibroacoustic therapy in Frontiers in Medicine in 2023, in patients with COVID-19 and respiratory failure. The findings were mixed. Oxygenation improved on day one in one mode, while carbon dioxide rose in another, and the authors called for further randomized trials before anyone draws conclusions. That is an acutely ill clinical population, a long way from a listening room, and it belongs in the record precisely because it is not a clean win.

What an hour gives a tired body

Sixty minutes flat on your back on AVA is already a different proposition from sixty minutes on a couch. Your weight is fully supported across one octagon platform, the low end enters through five points of contact, and the muscles that have been holding your posture upright all week get a signal they respond to before you have decided to relax.

We are not going to attach a percentage to any of that. It is simply what the room does.
