Resetting the nervous system
Heart rate variability, vagal tone, and the cortisol claim we will not make.
Reset is a word people use loosely. Here is the narrow version we can defend. A stressed nervous system holds a bias toward readiness, and certain inputs move that bias back toward rest for a while. Not a factory reset. A change in balance, held long enough to notice.
The measurement everyone reaches for is heart rate variability. The heart does not tick. The interval between beats stretches and contracts constantly, largely under vagal control, and the size of that variation tracks how much of your system is currently in its rest and repair mode. It is the cleanest reading of autonomic balance you can take without breaking skin, which is why this small literature keeps returning to it.
Two things follow from that. A single reading tells you very little on its own, because variability moves with breath, posture, caffeine and the hour of the day. A reading taken before and after the same input, in the same person, on the same afternoon, tells you a great deal more. That is the design most of these studies use, and it is why their numbers are worth reading at all.
What the vibration studies measured
Kantor and colleagues, in Frontiers in Psychology in 2022, gave fifty four university students twenty minutes of low frequency sound between zero and one hundred hertz and recorded a rise in parasympathetic heart rate variability markers against placebo. Hauser, Besson, Degache and Gremeaux, in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living in 2025, found vagal tone and parasympathetic activity measurably improved thirty minutes after a low frequency vibration session. The timing there is the interesting part: the effect was still present after the input had stopped.
Music alone shows related movement. Parizek, Visnovcova, Hamza Sladicekova and colleagues, writing in Physiological Research in 2023, found that higher frequency music segments were associated with increased heart rate complexity and vagal modulation relative to silence. Complexity is not the same thing as calm. But a system carrying more variation is a system that is not locked.
The cortisol claim we will not make
Here is the part most wellness copy skips. Hu, Jiang, Hegadoren and Zhang, in Critical Care in 2015, found that relaxing music improved sleep quality in intensive care patients and did not significantly change cortisol or melatonin. That is a null result and it matters. If someone tells you an hour of sound will lower your cortisol, they are ahead of the evidence.
What we will say is this. Early research has linked low frequency sound and slow music to a measurable shift in autonomic balance, mostly visible in the heartbeat, sometimes still present after the session ends. The samples are small and single site. The direction is consistent.
The effect was still there after the input stopped.
Why felt vibration and music together
Hearing is one channel. Touch is another. A note at forty hertz, carried loud enough through a platform, arrives on both at once, and the body files it as an event in the room rather than a track in your ears. Most guests leave with a lower voice and a longer stride, and that is not a claim about hormones. It is what an hour in a room built for this does.
None of this is a promise about your Tuesday. Bodies differ, weeks differ, and a good session on a hard week still leaves you in a hard week. What is fair to say is that the input is real, the measurement is real, and the direction across these studies is consistent.
