Stories of sound frequencies
Forty hertz in a clinic. A quarter of a hertz in an afternoon nap. Sixteen to one hundred and sixty through the hands and feet.
A frequency is just a number: how many times per second something moves. Put that number into a room, into a platform, into a body, and it stops being arithmetic. Four numbers have real studies attached to them. Here is what happened in each.
Forty hertz, one hour a day, for six months
In 2024, a team led by Hajos, Boasso and Hempel published the OVERTURE trial in Frontiers in Neurology. Seventy six people with mild to moderate Alzheimer disease used a device delivering forty hertz gamma sensory stimulation for one hour every day across six months. The finding the authors lead with is safety: the protocol was well tolerated over half a year, with a trend toward reduced cognitive and functional decline compared with sham. The primary outcome did not reach statistical significance.
That is the honest shape of the result, and our reason for citing it is narrow. It tells us that a specific frequency, delivered daily to a fragile population, is something bodies handle, and that forty hertz reliably drives measurable brain activity. It tells us nothing about treating any condition in a listening room, and we make no such claim.
A year later, in Healthcare, Sato, Maeda, Chinen and colleagues ran twenty eight days of daily forty hertz amplitude modulated audio through a smartphone with healthy older adults. The result again was tolerability rather than cure. Two studies, one number, and a good deal of restraint on all sides.
A quarter of a hertz, in the middle of the afternoon
0.25 hertz is one cycle every four seconds. It sits far below hearing. You cannot listen to it, only be inside its rhythm, which is roughly the pace of a long calm breath.
Fan, Zhu, Suzuki, Suzuki, Watanabe, Watanabe and Abe published a study in Scientific Reports in 2024 in which twelve healthy adults took four ninety minute afternoon naps. Binaural beats at that quarter hertz pace shortened the time it took them to reach slow wave sleep compared with a sham condition. Twelve people is a small room, and the binaural beat literature overall is limited enough, and varied enough in its results, that we treat this one as a story listeners tell rather than a finding to lean on.
Sixteen to one hundred and sixty, through the hands and the feet
This is the register that matters most to us, because it is the one AVA reproduces and the one you feel rather than hear.
Lim, Lim, Suhaimi, Chan and Wahab published a twelve week pilot study in the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation in 2018. Twenty three patients living with chronic low back or shoulder pain received low frequency vibroacoustic stimulation in that sixteen to one hundred and sixty hertz band, delivered through the hands and feet. Pain fell three and a half points on a ten point visual analogue scale. Disability fell thirteen and a half points on the Pain Disability Index. Twenty three people, one site, twelve weeks: a beginning, not a verdict.

The number under all of them
Somewhere under about a hundred hertz, hearing quietly hands the job to touch. A kick drum stops being a sound at the top of the mix and becomes an event in the sternum. A cello note lands behind the ribs before it lands in the ear. Nobody has to teach a body this. It is why a bass line makes a room move and a flute solo does not.
